Instructions for authors

The UAS Journal publishes articles, reviews and summaries concerning research, development and innovations in universities of applied sciences, as well as news and literary reviews in the field. There are four issues per year: March, May, October and December. We publish articles in Finnish, Swedish and English.

Each issue has a specific theme and named co-editor(s) who make the publishing decision together with the editor in chief. Specific criteria for each issue can be seen in the corresponding call for papers. You can find information about the themed issues here (in Finnish).

Abstract

An abstract (e.g., 3-5 key sentences) of the article is always written in English. The maximum length of an abstract is 1,000 characters (spaces included). The number of characters is not included in the length of an article.

Text style

The articles can be expert articles, columns, summaries, reviews or book reviews. An article can also be written in a ”lighter” manner – as an interview (question-answer) or completely on video, for example.

Content of expert articles

In expert articles the structure of the text should be freer than in scientific articles. It is recommended that genuine examples – practical descriptions – should be used in the text in a manner that interests the readers (e.g. case examples on collaboration between universities of applied sciences and companies in the area). The text of expert articles should be succinct and go straight to the point. The text should not, therefore, have too much background information on, for instance, what a university of applied sciences is, what its function is, or what RDI is. It is important for the writer to bring an expert’s point of view into the text: what he or she wants to say, why the development project is/was important, what practical problem it solves, what the development experience brings out. In the text, the writer puts forward ideas on the practical significance of the results of the development project, on new points of view and new areas of application. In the writing phase it is a good idea to think about the article’s precise target group – that is, who is especially interested in the content and who can be told of the article. In dealing with the subject matter, readers who do not work or study at universities of applied sciences – entrepreneurs and working people, for instance – should also be taken into account. It is also a good idea to take advantage of one’s own networks in the article, in the form of shared writing, for instance (i.e. a shared university of applied sciences – university – company article). The sources do not emerge from the text to take a very big role; the text reaches out to readers with professional expertise. Links, pictures and graphs add life to the text.

If English is not your first language, please ask an English-speaking colleague to proofread your article.

Length of the articles

A good expert article is short and can be read quickly. The number of characters is limited – a maximum of 10 000 (spaces included). If the limit is exceeded the writer will be asked to condense the text. The maximum length of a review is 4,000 characters, and that of an opinion piece is 3,000 characters (spaces included).

Formulation of the text

  • The text is justified to the left (not centred). Do not use automatic or manual hyphenation or paragraph indenting.
  • After a full stop, use one empty space, not two. Separate paragraphs from each other by using one empty space (enter key).
  • In addition to the main heading, the text can have no more than two title levels. However, you should format the headings and sub-headings clearly so that their levels can be clearly discerned in the layout phase.
  • All pictures and tables should be placed in their proper places in the text and not at the end of the manuscript. The caption of the figure or picture is written beneath the picture, and the caption of the table is placed above the graph.
  • The writer’s name is used in the name of the file.

Forms of saving the document

  • Sources are always marked at the end of the text.
  • The bibliography includes the writer, the year of publication, the name of the publication and/or article, the publisher and the publisher’s domicile (and in the end notes, the page number as well). In the text, the source references are indicated: (Aaltonen 2008, page number).
  • With respect to online sources, the bibliography or notes contain the name of the material (if the material is comparable to printed sources, the above information), the address of the website and, if needed, the date when the source was used.

The number of characters is not included in the length of an article.

Key words

  • Key words are placed after the sources.
  • Key words are indicated for the purpose of library classification. Include the field of education in the index words.
  • Write the key words in English.

Photographs

  • A photograph illustrates your article. A photograph is needed in every article.
  • Photographs need to be in digital form, as JPEG or PNG files with a minimum resolution of 72 DPI, landscape with minimun width of 960 px. Also send the original file of each photograph that is used.
  • The Writers have the responsibility to ensure that the material sent does not contain third-party material the publishing of which would infringe with their rights.

Article submission

Please submit your article via e-mail directly to the co-editor in charge of the theme (see the information about themes here) or to the editorial team at uasjournal(at)turkuamk.fi.
