This editorial explores the relationship between systems thinking, artificial intelligence (AI), and collective capability in higher education. System thinking helps reveal interconnections and long-term consequences, while AI provides new opportunities for learning, decision-making, and innovation.
The authors argue that understanding and influencing complex systems has become increasingly important in teaching, research, innovation activities, and societal engagement. While systems thinking provides tools for understanding interconnected phenomena, systemic agency emphasizes the ability to act within and shape those systems.
The editorial presents the theme issue as a platform for examining systemic approaches from diverse perspectives. The editorial concludes that the most significant question of the AI era is not the agency of AI alone, but the collective agency that emerges when humans and AI operate together as part of the same system.
