The theme of UAS Journal 1/2026 is current topics. In particular, articles that deal with the role of universities of applied sciences in cooperation related to preparedness, national defence and comprehensive security, which are vital for society, are welcome. It can be about degree education and its emphases, RDI activities or societal impact.
The main focus of the issue is on the possibilities of universities of applied sciences to support preparedness and resilience, the expansion of the national defence-related competence base and cooperation networks, the technical development of dual-use products and the overall security of society from the perspective of regional vitality and security of supply. However, it is possible to include some articles focusing on very topical themes in the issue without any connection to the perspectives of preparedness, national defence and comprehensive security.
We are looking for concrete examples of cooperation projects related to the theme of universities of applied sciences as well as the results of degree education and RDI work. We hope that the issue will include expert articles from both universities of applied sciences and beyond. We encourage co-authoring, especially in partnership-based activities. In addition to articles, the texts provided can also be more free-form reviews, speeches, interviews and expert texts commenting on current topics. The number can also offer well-edited and technically high-quality audiovisual content.
The maximum length of an expert article is 10,000 characters, a review 4,000 characters, and more free-form texts about 3,000 characters (incl. punctuation marks). More detailed instructions for writing can be found at https://uasjournal.fi/kirjoita-lehteen/kirjoitusohjeet/. You should read them carefully.
UAS Journal regularly receives more article offers than can be published. Normally, about half of the articles are published, with the number of articles being 12–15 per issue. For this reason, in the first stage, we ask the authors to write an abstract (max. 200 words) and create a magazine as a whole based on them. After that, we will ask the selected applicants to provide the full text and image suggestions. The editors comment on the manuscript and the writers have just over a week to make suggested edits or corrections. A more detailed schedule is below.
Theme editors:
Matti Rahko, D. Tech, Lecturer (matti.rahko@oamk.fi; Oulu University of Applied Sciences)

Ulla Asikainen, Head of Education (ulla.asikainen@karelia.fi; Karelia University of Applied Sciences)
- Abstracts of approximately 200 words must be sent to the theme editors to the above email addresses on 5.12.2025.
- As a rule, a response will be sent to all those who have submitted an abstract by 12.12.2025 or at the beginning of the week starting on 15.12.2025 at the latest.
- Article manuscripts and image suggestions must be sent to the theme editors by 20.1.2026. Feedback on the articles will be sent to the responsible author in the week starting on 2 February 2026. The corrected version of the articles must be submitted by 14.2.2026.
